Introduction: Total or partial rhinectomy for malignancies of the nasal cavity is a very effective but mutilating treatment and a common reason for acquired nasal defects. Bone-anchored nasal prostheses present a well-established alternative to complex surgical reconstruction with good aesthetic and functional results. This study reports on the clinical outcome of the Titanium Epiplating System (Medicon, Tuttlingen, Germany) used at our institution.
Material and Methods: Patients who underwent total or partial rhinectomy at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf and received a nasal prosthesis using the Titanium Epiplating System between August 2014 and July 2024 were included in this retrospective study. We evaluated implant survival, implant loosening, screw loss, periimplantitis, and the need for revision surgery or explantation using univariate statistics.
Results: The study included 47 patients (26 male, 21 female) with a mean age of 66 ± 12 years at implantation. Over a mean follow-up duration of 29 months (range: 3-119 months), the implant survival rate was 89.4%. Five patients required explantation: two due to disease recurrence, two due to osteonecrosis following adjuvant radiotherapy, and one due to recurrent periimplantitis. One patient underwent revision surgery due to screw loss.
Discussion: In summary, nasal prosthetic reconstruction via the Titanium Epiplating System is associated with good clinical outcomes and low complication rates in patients with nasal carcinoma. It presents a safe, reliable, and uncomplicated system for bone-anchored nasal prosthetic treatment.
