Background: The increasing digitalization of teaching in medical education still offers a lot of untapped potential for improving both knowledge transfer and student satisfaction. As part of a study, data was collected from students and lecturers regarding digital teaching in ENT. The aim was to gain a better understanding of the respective needs and thus improve the development of digital teaching formats.
Material and methods: The present data collection comprises two target group-specific surveys, which were conducted using online questionnaires. Students in the 5th - 9th semester of the medical faculty at the University of Hamburg were included (n=282). In addition, all clinic directors of ENT clinics in Germany (n=175) were addressed. The students will be surveyed again in the winter semester 2023.
Results: A total of 76 students (response rate of 26.9%) and 107 lecturers (175 addressed German ENT clinics) took part in the first survey. The majority of the students surveyed stated that they were more motivated to learn (76.6%), more likely to participate (63.9%) and more concentrated (61.1%) in offline formats. 40.2% of lecturers saw digitalization as a way to reduce the workload without any relevant loss of teaching quality. A survey after one year of pandemic freedom will show how opinions on this have changed.
Discussion and conclusion: For ENT, digital teaching and learning methods offer a promising opportunity to meet the needs of teachers and students. However, targeted use is important in order to synergistically exploit the advantages of analog and digital teaching formats.
