13th WORLD CONGRESS FOR NEUROREHABILITATION

The World Congress of Neurorehabilitation is pleased to present a free afternoon forum for People With Lived Experience at the Vancouver Convention Centre.  The session will also be available by videoconference.  Registration is required.  World experts will describe the latest research that has the potential to impact care for people living with neurological conditions. Our clinicians will also discuss strategies to improve physical and mental health, and to lessen the effects of aging with a chronic health condition.  People living with a neurological condition such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury may find this forum of interest.  Family and carers, and supporting non-profit organizations are also welcome. 

This session will provide an overview of the most recent high impact clinical trials in neurorehabilitation, including studies in stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. 

Dr. Janice Eng, PhD, PT is the Co-chair of the 2024 World Congress of Neurorehabilitation. She is the Co-director of the Centre for Aging SMART at Vancouver Coastal Health. She is a Killam Professor at the University of British Columbia and a Canada Research Chair in Neurological Rehabilitation. She is also a scientist at the GF Strong Rehab Centre which is the largest rehabilitation program in the province of British Columbia.

High impact clinical trials that could transform the health of people living with a neurological condition

Patient forum session

This session will explain techniques used for neuromodulation and some of the latest evidence related to effects of neuromodulation on a wide range of outcomes such as activities of daily living, bladder function and speech and language in neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s Disease, stroke and spinal cord injury. 
 
Dr. Naaz Desai, PT, PhD is a Parkinson Canada funded Post-doctoral Fellow at Krembil Research Institute-University Health Network, Toronto. Dr. Desai has extensive experience in applying functional electrical stimulation in spinal cord injury and holds patents related to these devices. She also has an expertise in brain stimulation techniques for assessment and treatment in neurological conditions. She has received various awards for her research, including the Geoff Fernie Impact Award and a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Scholarship for her Doctoral studies. She is an invited expert on the Canadian Spinal Cord Injury practice guideline panel and represents the Canadian Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Association at the WHO’s World Rehabilitation Alliance.

Neuromodulation – Stimulating brain and nerve pathways to improve neurorehabilitation outcomes

This session will present the latest evidence on how exercise can improve memory and thinking, as well as on falls and mobility in older adults and in people living with neurological conditions. What kinds of exercise and how much exercise is needed to get benefits in cognition and physical function will be discussed. 

Dr. Teresa Liu-Ambrose is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Healthy Aging, University of British Columbia. She is the Co-director of the Centre for Aging SMART at Vancouver Coastal Health. She is the Research Director of the Vancouver General Hospital Falls Prevention Clinic. She is now internationally for her work in clinical trials of exercise with cognitive and mobility outcomes in older adults. Her research findings have been implemented in health authorities, translated into a provincial-wide program, and influenced international practice guidelines to promote healthy aging.

Aging: Improving cognitive health with exercise

This session will tell you why you should take part in research studies in your local region and where to find research that is looking for people living with neurological conditions. In addition, this session will also introduce you to the role of patients in health research as Patient Partners, describing other avenues where People with Lived Experience can becoming engaged with researchers and organizations to maximize the benefits of research. 

Jennifer Monaghan, BA, LLB. 
Ms. Monaghan suffered a devastating stroke at 43 years old and now is living with heart failure. She has served as a Patient Partner informing research for numerous organizations, including the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, British Heart Foundation and Canadian Women’s Heart Health Summit. She was the recipient of the 2021 Nieboer Lecturer Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation which honours an outstanding member of the community who have been directly impacted by stroke, and have turned their personal experiences to help others.

Research – People with Lived Experience and Research: Why you should participate and How to get engaged

This session will review strategies and practical tips to address common physical and mental health conditions when living with a chronic neurological health condition. Focus will be on self management strategies and how individuals with live experience of neurological conditions may work with care providers to improve their wellness. 
 
Dr. Jennifer Yao, MD FRCPC is a clinical assistant professor who specializes in neurorehabilitation at GF Strong Rehab Centre. She is the Head of the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of British Columbia and the Medical Manager on the Acquired Brain Injury program at GF Strong. She is involved in teaching of medical trainees and sees both inpatients and outpatients with a variety of brain and spinal cord injuries. Her research interests are focused on stroke and brain injury rehabilitation. She is co-chair of the writing group for the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations on Rehabilitation, Recovery and Community Participation following Stroke.
