Introduction:Stabbing injuries constitute a significant concern in big cities 1. In 2023, we observed a rising trend in these injuries between 2015 and 2021 2. Since then, the incidence of these injuries has continued to rise, showing a dramatic surge in 2024.
Methods:We conducted a retrospective chart review between July 2015 and September 2024 for all patients treated due to a stabbing jury. We assessed demographics, hospital length of stay (LOS), intra-hospital mortality, injury severity score (ISS).
Results:We treated 433 patients for stabbing injuries during the study period. The mean age was 35.5 ± 12.02 years, and 90.99 % of the patients were male. The severity of patients' injuries had a mean ISS of 7.5 ± 9.19, and 92.34 % of the patients were transferred to ward for a mean LOS of 9.5 ± 6.36 days. The intra-hospital mortality was 1.62 %.The incidence of stabbing injuries significantly increased in 2024. Up until 2023, 49 to 52 patients were treated per year. Between January and September 2024, we treated 74 patients following stabbing injuries.
Conclusion:We observed a significant increase in stabbing injuries between 2015 and 2024. The rising incidence in 2024 is alarming, and the negative impact of these injuries on healthcare professionals has previously been discussed 3. Thus far, there is no causal explanationfor this trend in Germany.
