Introduction: Population aging in Brazil has led to an increase in hospitalizations due to falls, which escalates healthcare costs, extends hospital stays, and raises mortality rates with advancing age. This study analyzes the relationship between hospitalization numbers, costs and durations across age groups, exploring critical questions: Are comorbidities more prevalent in older individuals? Are fall-related injuries more severe among the elderly, or is age itself an aggravating factor?
Material & Methods: This descriptive, quantitative, and retrospective study used data from the Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), accessed through DATASUS. Data were organized to analyze mortality rates, length of stay, and hospitalization costs according to patient age groups.
Results: Advancing age is a significant risk factor for hospitalizations due to falls, affecting the number of admissions, length of stay, costs, and mortality rates. Analysis indicates that 37% of hospital expenses were attributed to the 80+ age group, followed by 18.3% for ages 75-79, 16.7% for 70-74, 16.6% for 60-64, and 11.2% for 65-69, demonstrating varying costs by age group.
Conclusions: The study highlights the concern over increasing hospitalizations and mortality due to falls among the elderly, emphasizing financial impacts and prolonged hospital stays. Data from 2019 to 2023 reveal that population aging contributes to higher hospitalization rates, mortality, and associated costs, with the 80+ age group most affected. This underscores the need for targeted strategies to reduce fall rates, alleviate economic burdens, and improve life quality among the elderly.
