Dr. Sandro Rizoli received his Doctor of Medicine degree and completed a General Surgery residency in Brazil. He moved to Canada in 1992 and underwent a second residency in General Surgery at the University of Toronto. The Residency was followed by two fellowships: in Trauma and Critical Care; and a PhD under Dr. Ori Rotstein.In 2002 he joined the University of Toronto and the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre as Associate Professor of Surgery and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Rizoli was promoted to Full Professor in 2012. Dr. Rizoli was awarded 2 endowed chairs: De Souza Chair in Trauma and the St. Michael’s & University of Toronto Endowed Chair in Trauma Research. Dr. Rizoli was President of the Panamerican Trauma Society, the Trauma Association of Canada, and Chair of the Region XII (Eastern Canada) of the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons.Currently, he has over 300 peer-reviewed publications, supervised numerous PhD, MSc, clinical/research fellows, residents, and students. Dr. Rizoli is presently the Medical Director of Trauma of the Hamad General Hospital in Doha, Qatar. He is also the Editor of 2 surgical Journals: JEMTAC and the Panamerican Journal of Trauma.
