Dr. Rafael Consunji [cohn-soon-hee] is the Director of the Hamad Injury Prevention Program and a Consultant of Trauma and Critical Care Surgery at the Hamad Trauma Center, Hamad Medical Corporation in Doha, Qatar. He is a graduate of the College of Medicine and the General Surgery Program of the University of the Philippines, Manila, Philippines. He completed the Fellowship Program in Trauma & Surgical Critical Care at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the Master of Public Health program, with an additional Certificate in Injury Prevention and Control, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.Dr. Consunji has more than 2 decades of experience in Academic Surgery, Critical Care, Public Health and Health Policy at the College of Medicine, University of the Philippines in Manila, the Department of Surgery, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Department of International Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Hamad Trauma Center, Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar. He founded and directed a national non-profit organization focused on preventing unintentional injuries in children [SAFE KIDS Philippines], he has managed community-based road safety projects for children in China and South Korea and coordinated regional programs of SAFE KIDS Worldwide from Washington DC. Presently, he directs the Hamad Injury Prevention Program [HIPP] at the Hamad Trauma Center, the national trauma center of Qatar, and continues to collaborate with key stakeholders for road safety and injury prevention in Qatar and in the region. He has experience in research, capacity building, policy formulation, program implementation and evaluation for injury prevention and trauma care in the US, Qatar, Malaysia, the Philippines, the Asia-Pacific Region and Sub-Saharan Africa. He has been the recipient and manager of research and program grants from the Department of Health (Philippines), World Health Organization (WPRO), the Road Traffic Injuries Research Network (World Bank Global Road Safety Facility), UNICEF, the World Bank, FedEx Express, Fresenius-Kabi, the HMC Medical Research Center and the Qatar Foundation National Priorities Research Program.
