M. Mahesh, MS, PhD, is the Professor of Radiology and Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD. He is the Chair of the Radiation Control Committee for the Johns Hopkins Health Systems. Prior to that he served as chief physicist for the Johns Hopkins Hospital over 29 years. 

Dr Mahesh is board certified from the American Board of Radiology (ABR) and is a member of the Radiation Control Advisory Board (RCAB) for the State of Maryland. His research interests are in medical imaging, particularly in areas of computed tomography (CT), interventional fluoroscopy and digital mammography. In addition, he has broad experience in medical imaging physics and radiation safety. Dr Mahesh strongly strives to enhance radiation risk communications with patients, public and the media. 

Dr Mahesh is the Associate Editor for the Journal of American College of Radiology (since 2007). He currently serves as member of the Board of Chancellors and Chair of Medical Physics Commission for the American College of Radiology (ACR) (since 2016). He served as treasurer and board member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) (2016-2021). He has served as 2nd vice-president of Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). He also serves as subject-matter-expert (SME) to the United Nations-International Atomic Energy Agency (UN-IAEA) and is the national contact person of the United States and is a member of a small group of experts on medical exposure for the United Nation Scientific Committee on Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR). Dr Mahesh was the 2nd medical physicist in the United States to serve as president of radiological society, namely, Maryland Radiological Society and is the only medical physicist to have served on the board of Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT). He also served as chair of faculty senate for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (2017-2019). 

Dr Mahesh has published more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and given more than 150 international talks and several grand rounds. Dr Mahesh is the author of the textbook titled ‘MDCT Physics: The Basics – Technology, Image Quality and Radiation Dose’ (translated in Japanese language) 

Dr Mahesh is a fellow of AAPM (2007), ACR (2009), ACMP (2011), Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) (2011) and International Organization of Medical Physics (IOMP) (2019). 

Dr Mahesh is an elected council member of the National Council of Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) since 2015 and to the International Council of Radiation Protection (ICRP) Committee 3 (Medicine) since July 2021. He is also member of the executive committee and chair of the science committee for the International Organization of Medical Physics (IOMP) since 2022. Dr Mahesh was recently elected to serve on the Presidential Chain (President-Elect (2024), President (2025) and Board Chair (2026)) for the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).
