Abstract

Introduction:

Pleomorphic adenomas are the most common benign tumors of the salivary glands. In most cases, they are located in the parotid gland or other large salivary gland. Occurrence in the small glands is unusual. Pleomorphic adenomas in other locations have been reported but are very rare.

Material/Methods:

We present the case of a young 34-year-old, otherwise healthy patient with a 6-month history of a mass on the tip of his nose. The mass increased in volume and led to a cosmetic unpleasant sensation. Other symptoms such as pain, rhinorrhea, and epistaxis have been absent. The mass was resected and evaluated leading to the diagnosis of a pleomorphic adenoma. The literature was screened for other reports of uncommon occurrences of pleomorphic adenomas.

Results:

The patient recovered from surgery without any major complications. Literature review yielded approximately 120 other cases of pleomorphic adenomas in the nose and nasal cavity. The most common symptom was a visible mass that limited the cosmetic appearance of the nose. The nasal cavity seems to be more frequently involved than the outer nose, e.g., the nasal alae.

Discussion:

Nasal pleomorphic adenomas are sporadic but should be considered as a possible differential diagnosis. Histological confirmation is always indicated. Surgical excision can be offered when symptoms occur, or the cosmetic appearance is impaired.
