Abstract

Abstract text (incl. references and figure legends)

Case history: Neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of the appendix is the most common type of appendiceal cancer and is rare in the paediatric population. Appendiceal NET is detected in 0.1%-2.3% in all appendectomy specimens. The clinical manifestations of this cancer are not specific and could be very similar to those of acute appendicitis. Clinical findings:In th case report, a 14-year-old boy presented in our clinic with acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain and an ultrasound suggesting acute appendicitis complicated with an abscess. Investigation/Results: It was performed an emergency laparoscopic appendectomy. Diagnosis: The child was diagnosed with a NET of the appendix, by histopathological and immunohistochemistry examination of the specimen.Therapy and Progressions: After studying the tumor characteristics and the possibility of spread disease, it was performed a subsequent right hemicolectomy. Comments: The prognosis of the appendiceal NET is excellent, with more than 90% survival probability at 10 years and an overall risk of metastases of <10%.
