Introduction:

Fractures of the zygomatic bone and the zygomaticomaxillary complex are among the most common osseous injuries of the midface and require differentiated surgical treatment to restore aesthetics and functionality. In particular, facial symmetry must be restored, adequate chewing function must be guaranteed, and optimal bulb position and functionality must be restored.

Material and Methods / Results

This retrospective study analyses 275 cases of our clinic for the period 2014-2024 in the treatment and aftercare of these fractures. All patients treated surgically and conservatively for a zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture were included. The following dimensions in the treatment of this type of fracture were analyzed: Age, gender, etiology, fracture pattern according to the AO classification, interdisciplinary surgical treatment together with oral and maxillofacial surgery, fixation methods (one-point, two-point, three-point osteosynthesis), intraoperative complications, postoperative complications, long-term results in the context of complications occurring during the course, ophthalmologic complications and the frequency of osteosynthesis plate removal during the course.

Discussion / Conclusion

This study's results show that most fractures can be attributed to rough handling, traffic accidents, or falls in the home environment. Regardless of the fixation method, osteosynthesis is a safe and low-complicated surgical treatment method for this type of fracture.
